Food That's a Breath of Fresh Air

Not yet rated
A steady diet of red meat and fatty, sugary, processed foods could leave your lungs in need.

But generous portions of fruit, veggies, fish, and whole grains are like a breath of fresh air. This lighter fare reduces your risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

A Look at Your Lungs
Most people associate lung disease with smokers. But secondhand smoke and other lung irritants like pollution are risk factors, too. Which may explain why about 5 to 12 percent of the people with COPD are nonsmokers. But in smokers and nonsmokers alike, it's serious stuff. COPD is currently the fourth leading cause of death in both the U.S. and Europe.

Junk Diet, Junkety-Junk Lungs
Are you using the right muscles when you breathe? Find out here.
Although smoking is the prime risk factor, Western diets don't seem to help the situation. People have a higher risk of COPD if they eat a typical Western diet of refined grains, cured and red meats, desserts, and fatty foods like French fries and nachos. Those nasty nitrites found in processed meats, along with the high glycemic load of refined grains, desserts, and sweets, may inflame your breathing machines.
