Factors that may increase the risk that an ulcer will recur include:

  • Persistent Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection.
  • Continued use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Cigarette smoking.
  • Hypersecretory conditions (conditions in which the stomach produces excessive acid).
  • Past history of ulcer recurrence or ulcer complications.
