A red, raw rash that looks like the skin has been burned or scalded may be caused by rubbing of the skin in the diaper area. You also may see some raised pimples that ooze clear liquid outside the border of the rash. Skin folds are not likely to have a rash.
A diaper rash is usually uncomfortable. A baby may cry when his or her diaper is wet or soiled. An older, confused adult may become irritable, agitated, or combative when he or she has a rash in the diaper area.
A rash in the diaper area can occur if:
- A wet or dirty diaper is left on for too long. The skin becomes irritated from contact with the urine or stool.
- The diaper or incontinence brief rubs the thighs, genitals, buttocks, or belly area.
- A skin reaction develops to perfumes in the disposable diapers or incontinence briefs or to detergents or fabric softeners used to clean cloth diapers.
A rash from contact with irritating substances generally is not serious and often clears up with home treatment. If the rash does not improve with home treatment and is spreading, weeping, or bleeding, or if an open sore is present, a visit to your doctor is needed.
