The following steps can help you prevent psoriasis or improve your skin condition if you have psoriasis:

  • Treat all infections promptly. Infections can cause flares of psoriasis, especially strep throat infections.
  • Minimize stress, which may make psoriasis worse.
  • Try to avoid skin injuries and irritation, which can cause new sores or make sores worse. Tight shoes, clothing, watchbands, and hats can irritate the skin.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and makeup that can irritate the skin.
  • Use a home humidifier to increase moisture in the air and help keep your skin moist.
