Fever and breathing problems in babies and young children may mean a serious respiratory infection is present. Symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty breathing.
  • Grunting.
  • Wheezing.
  • Barking cough.
  • Drooling or a sore throat with difficulty swallowing.
  • Bluish skin color (cyanosis).

A child who has a fever and any trouble breathing needs immediate medical care.
