By Maria G. Essig, MS, ELS

The amount of galactose transferase in a blood sample can be measured in units per grams (U/g) of hemoglobin.

  • A unit is an arbitrary amount agreed upon by scientists and doctors. A gram is an amount equivalent to 1/28 ounce.
  • Hemoglobin is the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen.
