A rectovaginal exam is done to examine the vaginal and rectal areas for abnormalities.

During a rectovaginal exam, your health professional inserts one lubricated, gloved finger into the vagina and a second finger of the same hand into the rectum while pressing on the lower abdomen with the other hand. This allows your health professional to feel where and how large your pelvic organs are. You can tell your health professional if it hurts when your organs are touched or moved.

A rectovaginal exam is done as part of a regular gynecologic exam. A Pap test is also usually done at this time.
