Live alone and have disposable income. Here's a list of helpful tips:

  1. Don't divulge personal information over the phone, except to a reputable organization. Safeguard your bank account number, credit or phone card number and Social Security number.

  2. Remember that it is illegal for telemarketers to ask for bank account, credit card, phone card or Social Security numbers to verify a prize or gift.

  3. Steer clear of "something-for-nothing" or "get-rich-quick" offers.

  4. Always ask questions and check references.

  5. Never turn over large amounts of cash to anyone, regardless how appealing the offer.

  6. Do your homework with dealing with contractors. Always get a written estimate and compare it to other estimates from known, reputable businesses.

  7. Report suspicious offers to the police immediately. Note the suspect's appearance, company name and vehicle description and license plate, if possible.

  8. To reduce unwanted telephone solicitation, add phone numbers to the national "do-not-call" registry by calling 888-382-1222, TTY 866-290-4326 or by going to www.donotcall.gov.

  9. Remember that paying by credit card offers some protections. You have the right to dispute the charges if you don't get what you were promised.
