Normal saline solution is ordinary table salt mixed with sterile water in a strength that is similar to tears. Some eyewash solutions (such as Bausch and Lomb Eye Wash) contain normal saline solution.

Most prepared normal saline solutions can be used for moist compresses applied to the eyes. However, nasal spray solutions that contain normal saline should not be used in the eyes because they may contain preservatives and other ingredients that could be harmful to the eyes.

Use only sterile water solutions in your eyes or to clean your contact lenses. Tap water can cause a serious infection. Do not use a homemade saline solution to clean your contact lenses or rinse your eyes.
