Chondrosis, also called chondromalacia, is a softening or loss of smooth cartilage, most frequently that which covers the back of the kneecap. The softened cartilage may cause pain whenever pressure is applied to the underside of the kneecap during activities such as kneeling, going down stairs, or sitting for long periods.
