Your child will have 20 baby teeth (primary teeth) which are later replaced by permanent teeth. Primary teeth usually begin to break through the gums when a child is about 6 months old. A baby's first tooth can come in as early as 3 months or as late as 1 year of age. In rare instances, a baby's first tooth may come in after 1 year of age. Most children have all of their primary teeth by the time they are 3 years old.
Secondary teeth (permanent teeth) typically begin to replace primary teeth when a child is 6 to 7 years old. A secondary tooth usually pushes out the primary tooth it is replacing.
