What Increases Your Risk
The possibility of developing diverticulitis increases with age.
You may be more likely to develop diverticulitis if you:
- Eat a low-fiber diet.
- Have a family history of diverticulosis.
- Smoke tobacco. According to one study, people who smoke may face a greater risk of developing complications of diverticulitis than those who do not smoke. The study did not link smoking with a particular complication.2
