General Discussion

Listeriosis is a rare infectious disorder caused by the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, which is usually transmitted to humans through the consumption of contaminated food. Clinical syndromes associated with Listeria infection include febrile gastroenteritis, sepsis, meningitis, encephalitis, and infections causing spontaneous abortions, stillbirth, and neonatal disease. Listeriosis is commonly fatal. Listeriosis most often affects unborn fetuses, newborns, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Prompt recognition and treatment of the disease is necessary to avoid several serious complications.
