Additional medications that doctors may use to treat the symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

• Beta-blocker medications, including propranolol (such as Inderal), atenolol (Tenormin), or metoprolol (Lopressor), to control a fast heartbeat, tremors, sweating, and nervousness. Your doctor may prescribe one of these medicines while you are waiting for antithyroid medicine or radioactive iodine treatment to start working.
• Medicated eyedrops, if your eyes are irritated.
• Corticosteroid medications, to control any pain or swelling in the thyroid gland.
