Chlorhexidine gluconate (Peridex) mouthwash can prevent thrush in people who are taking medications that impair the body's natural defense (immune) system. It has been recommended as a mouth rinse to prevent thrush in people who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

Chlorhexidine can cause staining of the teeth and the inside of the mouth, especially the tongue.
