My Story

My story of wellness is an ongoing transformation. I am a 28-year-old woman, married with two great kids. I have always been overweight, for as long as I can remember. I lost 104 pounds back in 2000, but two pregnancies 21 months apart has left me well overweight again. My father died of a sudden heart attack when I was 15. Everyone in my family was encouraged to get checked. I didn't think that applied to me, after all, I am young and a woman. Then my brother, who is 34, was diagnosed with cholesterol of 500 and high blood pressure. I went to the doctor and my blood pressure was up, which it has never been, and I had my cholesterol tested. It is high for my age. I was also told I have polycystic ovary disease and would need medication. I knew I needed to make a change.

My Steps

First, I had a serious heart to heart with myself. I started with the things that I eat and making sure that I exercise everyday, at least a little. Every bit counts.

The Hard Part

I love food, plain and simple. Adjusting to life without things like ice cream and ranch dressing has not been easy. But I look at my kids and husband and know I need to be here for them.

Me Now

I am starting to feel like a different person. I have only lost five pounds so far, so I am a work in progress, but I am starting to have energy again. I haven't had much since before my youngest was born, and she is two now.

My Practical Advice

Never tell yourself that heart disease is a "man's disease." It isn't. It's the number one killer of women. Become educated, and put yourself first. Women always feel guilty thinking of anything for themselves. They always want to give and give. Take some time to become re-acquainted with yourself. You do matter. Do it for yourself, not to please other people.
