I agree with Dr. Levy; I have a history of depression and it has overtaken me at times of tramatic times in my life when issues were beyond my control. After a while I would engage in exercise and increase it as I went along. The more I increased it the more I got energy, my mental attitude got more possitive as I accomplished more physical accomplishments. Pretty soon I was not only not depressed anymore I was taking control of all different parts of my life that I had let go. It really does work that way. Thanks for remind me of it Dr. Levy. I had forgotten about that time in my when depression took me over. I'm at another crossroad where depression is trying to clain my energies and I''m going to combat it the same way.

Dear Hiward Levy, excellent article. I think you would love my website. www.alpinediet.com. My book the Alpine Diet- Healthy lifestyle, is a global approach is keeping slim, physically, and mentally positive for the long term. Human being only do for a long period of time what they like to do. Therefore eat the foods he likes to eat which are good for him. Thus eating is a pleasure. Do the exercises you ,personally, like to do.(Most of exercise bikes are in the garage.) then you will miss the exercise when you can not do it. As the great philosopher Aristotle said, Virtue is Habit. enjoy. davidseld@yahoo.com

This article does nothing to discuss the seriousness of clincally depressed people. What he is saying is only relavant to people who are temporarily depressed or blue. People who are diagnosed as clinically depressed simply do not have the ability to "have a more positive attitude" or "go out and exercise to realive stress". The bottom line is that truley diagnosed depressive people are depressed because of chemical discrepencies in their brain, and saying "just get out and have a more upbeat attitude," is an unrealstic solution. Shouldnt doctors know this by now?
