Slipping back and forth between euphoria and the doomed world is very common in the bi-polar person.Their minute to minute day is "tossed" by the rehash of old problems and the worry of new ones not yet happened. As though someone had their fingers on the keyboard and were wildly pressing the + and - key. That is how the mood can change. This article ,especially the part about anhedonia , is point on.It is well written and especially helpful in a self diagnosis . Edesigner

You know, I have suffered from depression for about 15 years now. It has robbed me of the everyday joys of my family and friends. I am in constant pain from one part of my body or another. I have been on every type of anti-depressant on the market, and none seem to alleviate my symptoms. I muddle through every day. It is a chore to get up in the mornings and just to exist. Sometimes I am just tired of being tired.

Edesigner- actually bipolar (manic depressive disorder) is NOT characterized by rapid mood fluctuations, although many people are not aware of this fact. People with bipolar disorder go through days of 'mania' where they have high energy, racing thoughts, impulsive behavior and often need little sleep. This alternates with periods of depression. The periods of mania and depression do not cycle within a day, it takes several days or even weeks. Sudden, frequent mood changes indicate other psychological disorders that should be evaluated by a licensed professional.

Having a brother who has MDD has had rapid mood swings and within a day and hours. He sought the help of a medical professional and was diagnosed with MDD. After being on meds and continuing he has had no problems since then. He has had these swings for years and continued to get progressively worse. If one goes through these swings Do seek medical help!

Excellent article! My first depression episode was when I was 19 years old, my father was diagnosed with cancer and died within less than 6 months. I am 35 years old now and I have had another 3 episodes, I'm a survivor of a suicide attemp two years ago and my last episode was just this year, 2008. I have never read anything that could explain simply in a few paragraphs the nature and symptomathology od the depression illnes. People never understands me when I tell them that when I have depression I feel like I lost my brain, my intelligence, I can not even write 'cause it takes me too much to think how to spell my name or today's date. This article explained it perfectly and called it "brain fog". I could keep illustrating with my own experience how every piece of this article is just a wonderful resource of information regarding the symptoms of depression. I share openly my experience with no shame because I think I am very blessed that this illness couldn't kill me. I can't explain what I felt the moment I took my first consciouss breath and opened my eyes after taking 30+ pills to never wake up again. I thought I was never, ever, going to have another depression and not even two years later I had another one this year. I am taking medication, I am going to psychological therapy, I have to do a lot of things in order to stay healthy and free from this mythical illnes. I am a survivor and I haven't fight this battle alone; it can't be fought alone. If you relate somehow with the article or had observed someone with these symptoms, please, please, take action because this is a fatal disease. God bless us all.

Force yourself to smile and you'll soon stop frowning, Force yourself to laugh and you'll soon find something to laugh about. Wax Enthusiastic and you'll very soon feel so. The greatest joy in life is Creating! Anti-depressants can not be compared to the human ability to BE happy. The only happiness you'll ever find lies within YOU! not in a pill...

Hear, hear Jay! There's a danger that we hand over too much power to the medical establishment and the drug industry. Think of all the people who didn't need it taking Prozac when it was fashionable. SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a prize example of a windy medical term for the normal fluctuations of mood that humans have always experience as the seasons rotate. Why would be have spring festivals otherwise? Medicalising normal states that people can readily deal with themselves creates a lot of work for doctors and increases their power. It also sells a lot of drugs, of course. If you want to find some clinical philosophers who can help, try Stoics such as Epictetus, Seneca and Marcus Aurelius ...

Yes Jack, how about this from Yahoo news this morning? - NEW YORK – Healthy people should have the right to boost their brains with pills, like those prescribed for hyperactive kids or memory-impaired older folks, several scientists contend in a provocative commentary. College students are already illegally taking prescription stimulants like Ritalin to help them study, and demand for such drugs is likely to grow elsewhere, they say.
