I have had a colonoscopy and polyps were found and removed. I must go back in 5 years to repeat the process. I would much rather do this than be treated for colon cancer!

it would be helpful if you could clarify the current thinking regarding what age men and women should start seeking these exams. I understand there has been some change in the thinking about this recently.

Short and to the point. Note: The medication I received at the beginning of my colonoscopy did not render me "awake and cooperative." I was unconscious, completely so, until after the procedure. The pre-procedure medication was tasteless & easy to disguise in a suitable drink; it caused no discomfort to speak of. However I had fasted already for the day beforehand, and there wasn't much in my colon by then. People should NOT fear or avoid this procedure!!!

I've been on the fence as to whether to get a colonoscopy. I think this article convinced me that it's worth it and not really so difficult to go through. It certainly sounds better than cancer! Thanks!

They can put men on the Moon, send rovers to Mars, operate on a baby in the mothers womb, so on and so forth, but they cannot find a less invasive, less painful, less degrading, less upsetting way to check for colon cancer, I'm dumbfounded.

There is nothing painful, degrading, or upsetting of how checking for colon cancer is done. I was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in October of 2004 after quite a few misdiagnosis. By the time I was in the colonoscopy exam room I was bleeding rectally. Some doctors are reluctant to recommend colonoscopy or just plain incompetent. Not until I mentioned that my mother had just died a few months earlier of breast cancer did the doctor I saw that day schedule me for a colonoscopy. I have had chemo for the last four years and my cancer has now progressed to my lungs. I'm basically a walking dead man. Don't put it off. A few hours of discomfort (mainly the prep) versus years or months of pain before dying is worth it. By the way. I'm 52.

Heed the doc's warnings. Get tested at 50. A small indignity is better than a lingering and painful death...
