I HAVE to add a comment regarding the "sorbitol" laxative and the prescription requirement stated here. Please notice that many Diabetic candies contain "sorbitol". (Sugar-free candies). There have been cases of SEVERE dehydration in cases where toddlers or children have gotten a hold of packs of candy and eaten a whole package, and as a result gotten severe diarrhea. I underestimated the warning on these packages and after eating an entire packet of Jelly Belly sugar-free candies with sorbitol, had a cholera-type reaction. If you know what I am talking about, then you can believe me when I say, the warning on the package is there for a REASON. I have never been as sick as I was after eating that candy!

As an ulcerative colitis sufferer, who also happens to use medications for chronic pain, prescribed by a pain management physician, I am acutely aware of constipation problems. It is not a subject for "polite" conversation, thus, articles like this are very helpful. Note: IF one suffers from chronic pain, and uses narcotic pain relievers, constipation is a very real side effect and must be addressed. My pain management specialist recommends Senna-S, taken daily, along with a small amount of a fiber like metamucil, for optimum results. Works for me. Thank You!

My son is 13 months old and was born with caudal regression syndrome where his spine quit growing at the L1 and he is paralyzed from the waist down. He is currently taking lactulose and a senna based laxative - we started out with mineral oil and had to start the others when he started on whole foods. I did also get an allergy test done and found he was allergic to an assortment of foods including cows milk. I have cut that completely out, well almost, and found his constipation has gotten a little better - we only have to give the laxatives every other day as opposed to everyday. Thanks for the info!!

Funny, but i have not known people who eat MOSTLY vegetables to have constipation. When I go back to the eat-out diet full of starches (rice, wheat, potatoes etc) and stuff from the center of the grocery store, or mostly meats, then I get all plugged up. Doctors are quick to gloss over those "lifestyle changes," but what we eat and what we don't drink (enough water) is probably 98% of the problem. This advice doesn't make money for the pharmacy though.

By far the easiest way, I have found, is not let the constipation get sooo bad that you have to use drastic measures. My answer is: buy some vegetable juice (can or bottle) and drink 6oz each day every morning or afternoon - 8 oz. if necessary. Works like a charm. A small can of prune juice works well but I like the veg. juice better.

being regular prevents constipation - eating lots of veggies and fruits (banana, apple, etc.), drinking lots of water and maintaining daily exercise ( walking, stationary jogging, threadmill) stimulates a healthy gastrocolonic reflex... try it

This is a very good article and great advice. I have to take Miralax daily since having had complete bowel blockages which required surgery. No one wants to go through that. Gobie
