Antihistamines are most effective when taken prophylactically and have limited effectiveness in reversing symptoms. They should be used 2-3 weeks before allergy symptoms. The best drugs to use for reversing symptoms of cold and allergy are drugs like Flonase, Afrin, and Benylin (for cough).

My whole life I've been allergic to over 100 things as found by the "skin test" where they inject extracts of various allergens just under the skin. I took allergy shots for years, and they were effective for most of them. I was just too sensitive to tree pollen. Washing out the nose with saline spray (I use "Ayer") helps a lot. The generic claritin is great!. I'm SO glad there are non-drowsy forms of antihistimines. I usualy have to do one round of prednisone now, but, I used to have to go through two or three. There are some pretty nasty side effects to that, but luckily the trees just have their fun with me once a year, so it's not so bad. I think the nasal irrigation the Dr. was talking about is called a Netti Pot. Not sure about the spelling, but A lot of people swear by it. BTW don't confuse saline eye drops with visine...get it in the contact lens isle. 12 oz for about $2.00. So ya got the nose, and eyes covered. Pretty cheap too. The Dr. didn't mention how dangerous some nose sprays are. If you are unaware, they are addictive, and kill the tiny hairs that try to get rid of the tiny foreign objects that find there way in. Once you use them for a while, you use them for life. Avoid at all costs!!! Stick with saline, cheap and safe. Sorry for the long post. Have a sneeze free day!

This article was useful. I suffer from symptoms similar to allergic rhinitis. The drug cetrizine is very helpful for me. The only side effect that I have is extreme sleepy effect at night.
