Integrity has always been a word that has resonated with me. Something I strive for -try to be "conscious of" in my life and setting an example for my daughters. Integrity to me means being true to myself..listening to that still small voice inside. Anyway I am a work in progress and I still fall short sometimes...but I try to make amends..Thanks Dave ..Its good to be reminded..........and encouraged......

As Scott said above, integrity is doing the right thing even when there is no-one there to see. The truest test of integrity is doing the right thing even when you know it will creat some problem of difficulty for yourself! Many people struggle with, or have no real integrity. Why? Because as long s you look good in the public eye, you get the praise and awards. All too often people who do exercise integrity, by being honest, helpful, kind, and so on, are suspect, a thought of having a hidden agenda, or dismissed as being phony. How sad! And so, I say, integrity is doing the right thing while being ever mindful that no-one may ever acknowledge it or believe it of you - always question your motives! If you have expectations, or keep track of favours and such, or end up resentful, then that is not integrity.

Hi: I think you make a very valid point. Integrity comes from within. I think politicians reflect the society. It's difficult to hold politicians up to a standard that we areselves don't maintain. As a cardiologist, I see patients every day who are overweight, smoke, and follow very poor health habits. Yet, these same people want to be disease free. They want the best of care, when they aren't always willing to give this to themselves. I can't tell you how many times I ask patients if they'd be intested in coming to a workshop to work on their anxiety or depression- an rarely do I have anyone who is interested. Our society needs to embrace the concept of total health- body, mind, and spirit. Dr. Kirk Laman www.blog.drkirklaman.com

Great reminders about doing the right thing - especially when no one is looking. Integrity in the small moments does add up.

Anyone's interity and character is important. Throughout your life you will have a reputation and depending who is doing the thinking or talking about you it will may be good, bad or indifferent. However when you do the right thing, and not for selfish reasons or motives our God above knows all. PS: am I reading the date wrong from all those who wrote in before me (Fri. Nov 11, 2007 which is not here yet) or is there some kind of goof up. Have a safe weekend everyone (Fri. 11/3/07).

David, I have to say I so agree on this one..it's how you behave when noone is looking that shows your true colors..calm, cool and collected..or angry, mean and spiteful?? That is your integrity..I have to admit at times I start to get frustrated in certain situations and then I stop and say, " what are you doing??" this isn't you and why are you lashing out? I know where my passions lie and it is very important that I stand true..true all the time..I'm more apt in most situations to just be myself and stand on my own beliefs, sometimes i know it isn't the popular thing, but we have to stay true to our hearts and do what is just and right, not only to ourselves but to others. :-)

Good subject Dave. How Lawyers and especially Politicians are held up as beacons of integrity is completely beyond all rational thinking. But like I said, good subject. Fred13red

Hey, it's Freddie!! How are ya, Fred? You know, your comment made me think of how it used to be that parents would urge their children to pursue a respectable and honourable profession like a doctor or lawyer, and aspire to go into politics, maybe even be President (Prime Minister here) someday... and in any case, work hard and do a good job and you will be a success. My child has told me she wants to be a cashier at the local grocery store, and at first I was inclined to tell her that wasn't much to aspire to. I didn't. Because I have had a heck of a lot of great service, smiles and help from the cashiers and other staff at the local grocery store. Can't say as I have ever had anywhere near (if any!) of the same from lawyers and politicians, LOL! It's gotten to the point that the more status and money a career carries, the more weight people give to those people in terms of influence, and that is a sad state of affairs. High-paying job = prestige and influence = respect and admiration??? In other words, $ = hero? Yeeeuck! I've actually met impoverished people just short of being homeless and looking it who had more integrity, compassion and character. We need to get back to basics! Judge people according to their actions and every-day behaviour, rather then their title, status, fame or wealth!

My moral compass tends to very Libertarian. However, I tend to be more understanding and forgiving than some of my more rigid friends.

Hello WWW. Your last lines are so very right. A hero should always be someone who's actions, be they spontaneous, momentary or life long, benefit in a very, very positive way other people. This would eliminate most lying, graft seeking politicians and the rap stars held up as hero's who talk about crime as a life style and the defilement of women.-------------------------------Speaking of hero's--------------------------------------------I would like to give a shout out to the ALL the Police and Firefighters who do their jobs day in and day out, without the thought of individual fame and or recognition. Many actually shun the attention. Aaaaaand,, I would like to take the time to thank the Police who got people out of the wildfires way in Southern California and the Firefighters who fought the Southern California wildfires during the very dangerous conditions presented by fighting wildfires in heavy wind conditions last week.( Oct. 22---Oct. 27 2007)----Today is Nov. 4 2007.Yahoo has the posting dates and times, wrong.

You are so right Fred! And I would like to add EMT's and Paramedics to those everyday heroes we should be mindful of and thank! They are often passed over as they are not seen "in the front lines", but none-the-less also often work in dangerous conditions, and have to deal with horrific and gruesome situations, including coming to the aid of police and firefightres when things go wrong.

David this so rocks!! Integrity is how you represent yourself at all times, not just in the public, but when you are all alone and have choices to make..choices that affect that your whole life, seemingly unimportant decisions, but actually life changers! You have it right with your quote form Charles Swindoll...staying true to yourself when it isn't the popular consensus. Stand true, Stand tall and know that if you have it together inside the rest is easy. :-)
