For several years, I and my wife have been using a combination of echinacea purpurea, NAC, and Astrogalus to cure sinus infections following a cold. All of these together are now working for me us as well as antibiotics. I can't remember the last time I used antibiotics for a sinus infection. While the virus is very active(very running nose and shivering, etc) however, none of these start working and we don't take anything until the virus symptoms calm down. I suggest everyone give this a try and don't go to the doctor until you give this routine 2 weeks. Good luck.

I have read that one should not use echinacea continually, but to use only when needed. Is this true? To ward off colds it seems like you would need to take it continually.

Hi Dr Weil´s three years ago when I read your article about Mate Coca...I was delighted with your comments And again here your comments about Echinacea and cold problems are excellent. Unfortunately as you mention here there are not too many enthusiasm to perform an in deep research. I will like that you add other herbs that also help to prevent or alleviate the cold problems such as; the garlic, cats claw.or why not include the old but recently re-discovered the Peruvian camu camu. Any Way Dr Weil we truly appreciate your contribution to the alternative medicine with your always interesting comments. Jerome Shaman http://www.peruherbals.com

The mainstream medical establishment for some reason does not want to admit that Echinacea reduces the severity of colds, although anyone who has ever used it can attest that it does. I think what confuses them is that it does not "cure" the cold. If it does not work overnight, the way their dangerous cold remedies do, they say it is not effective. My cardiologist, who is not an alternative type at all, told me to get off the sudafed immediately and that it should not be marketed as a simple cold remedy. I am glad to see someone acknowledging the effectiveness of Echinacea.

I use echinecea and found that in me it works!! I used to get sick with cold and flue 2-4 times a year. Since I started taking two capsule a day during the winter months, I get sick 1-2 times a year now.

The studies leave unanswered the question, does it work.

Try a double 0 cap of root powder every two hours for colds that are already well started, until all symptoms are gone, as long as two or three days. Grow your own to be assured of the quality.

Echinacea is a popular herbal medicine but does it really live up to all the claims? Choice magazine analysed the active ingredients of 10 popular Australian brands of Echinacea products. None of the products tested showed they contain enough active ingredients to have any effect on the immune system. According to Choice magazine you'd have to be an optimist to find any effects from Echinacea! Published Australian University research has clearly shown that MC-S possesses powerful immune-stimulating properties that could be of benefit in restoring a suppressed immune system. MC-S can significantly stimulate the activity of white blood cells. It increases the expression of T-cells, NK-cells, Tumour necrosis factor (TNF) and Interferon (intracellular anti-viral activity). Its powerful anti-tumour activity has been shown to significantly inhibit the growth of breast, prostate, bowel and melanoma cancer cells. Human clinical trials have shown that MC-S can significantly reduced the adverse affects and incidents of colds, flu and secondary infections. MC-S is safe and exhibits a near-perfect benefit to risk profile for individuals afflicted with cancer or living with impaired immunity. See www.mc-s.com.au for details.
