methadone was abused by my sister who was coming off an addiction to prescription painkillers. she overdosed numerous times, but fortunately is alive and well today thanks to 9 months spent in rehab. her husband and 5 kids are glad to have her around!

Are there many patients who take methadone for Fibromyalgia? My doctor prescribed it for me 6 years ago, (started with 20mg once in the am and once in the pm) I'm down to 10mg in the am and 10mg in the pm, - I tried many other med's but to no avial. I can't get out of bed if I don't continue this dosage and if i do, my pain is so horrible, that I have contemplated suicide. I'm too scarred to sto this and try another, because if it doesn't work, I have to do through withdrawal and that is bad enough. Is there anything on the horizon with a cure - I'm on SSDI and would like very much to have my career back and the money would be extrememly helpful.

It always bothers me when i read anything to do with Methdone. I have Chronic Pain now for over 30yrs. I have tried everything except Meth. and i will not. I have never taken Heroin in my life and Meth is mostly used to eliminate the cravings for hard drugs. I have heard too many bad things about Meth and it scares me...If you have any solutions other than METHEDONE for Chronic Pain please inform me of alternatives. Thank you CG

As a former Methadone addict for over 10 yrs, without ever missing a dose,I take offense to this article.Withdrawl from this nightmare drug is excrutiating to say the least. In addition, take a look at the TV special, which was on HBO entitled "Methadonia"and tell us which zombie you prefered.I prefer the 12 steps and have been clean over 23 yrs.

I have been taking persc. meth for almost 4 years now. My dose is adjusted well for the 4 years I have been on it is taking for cronic lower back pain and I tell you this I have been pain free since I started with out any narco buzz that comes with the percs and oxys and also not having health insurance steady is even more of a reason that I am greatful I am persc. this med. My moderate dose around 100 mg a day for a months supply costs less then 30$ yes thats less then a dollar a day to remain pain free with no opiate buzz or high at all has been a lifesaver I am also a Commercial Truck Driver with no accidents and many safe driving awards. It should be persc. allot more but I am sure thier is way two much pressure from endo labs and perdue farma the 2 millon $ companies that make percocets and oxycontins. If i was persc. oxys my monthly costs would cover abouit 4 hours for 1 day with oxys and depending on the dose the most would be a full day yes 1 full day thats it if i was perscribed perco. Wake up Drs. and pain patients or maybe your just a drug attic seeking that narcotic buzz?

As an addiction counselor in a methadone clinic, I think that many of the comments on here have good points. Methadone is not for everyone. It is a very potent medication that a person can overdose on and of which the withdrawals are worse than any other opiate. However, unlike other opiates, you do not build a tolerance to methadone. Believe what you will, but you do not build a tolerance to methadone. This is the reason why it can work for people who have chronic pain, because it is acceptable to use as a pain killer. This medicine is also very good because once you get on a stable dose, you do not get high off of the drug. Methadone if a very potent and potentially fatal drug if not taken correctly and if mixed with other drugs. Therefore, a person should not be given mass amounts of it to take home, especially if they are in early recovery. That is why at the treatment center I work at, we require our new patients to attend 7 days a week. I could put more on here, but I have to go. I would be more than happy to educate anyone as to the benefits and harmful effects of methadone. Please email me with any questions at cparso03@shepherd.edu Chrissy

does'nt long term use of ANY opiate, especially methadone, cause irrepairable damage to our bodys dopamine gland?-making it pretty improbable to ever be free of the drug-i would consider that some long term damage to a REALLY important part of our brains!-am i wrong?-jen*,Mphs,TN

Methadone is not only a drug addict medication but it is also used often to treat chronic pain. Too bad it is not known for that instead.

My brother died of a methodone overdose....need I say more? We need to be well informed on any drug of the good and bad, all side effects. Drugs are deadly and need to be taken seriously if not this could happen and does happen often. Please do your research first. If your doctor does not help you then look for a new one or look up the information. My brother did not need to die. Let's not let this happen again. Stay informed.

also,i believe it is WRONG to just 'throw around'the reasons for using methadone-i have been on and off of methadone for almost 10 yrs-i decided almost 3yrs ago that no matter what i had to do to help myself,it would definately not involve getting back on the clinic-"uncle sam the dope man"-i have been drug free for only a short amount of time in the scheme of things-how i did this was removing myself from this city temporarily and staying with a very close drug free friend to help me through the withdrawls, both physical and mental-so much of the discomfort and illness really is psychosymatic-i got through the heroin withdrawls in about 10 days-i am now taking suboxone, down to 2mg/day- very soon to be 0mg!-i have had to come off of methadone on many occasions-and it has always taken so long and been more difficult than kicking heroin-there is an alternative for addicts other than methadone-subutex(bupronorphine)sp?,and suboxone, which is the same drug, only with a narcotic blocker added-METHADONE IS AN EVIL DRUG!!!

Do people or web-hosts respond to questions? I'm new and a technophobe, as well to trying to bridge my isolated world to others ... I live with the "ridiculous" aches, pains, incapacities, headaches, gastro blues, sleeplessness, depression, all associated with life AND a 34-year old case of Hep C. I am seriously considering methadone as a way of coping and performing better, (I once HAD a heroin problem lasting 3 years, so the prospect of being on methadone "forever" was nothing I aspired to before, however the quality and pains of my real life make it seem like something that just might help -- I also have been previously prescribed lots of garbage for bi-polarism, none of those meds ever did feel helpful. Please respond, anyone.
