Gastric bypass impairs the absorption of many nutrients, so that much of the nutrients in food and supplements as well will pass right through into the stool. Much higher doses of supplements may be needed, they may need to be taken in liquid form, and some will need to be injected, especially vitamin B12. Anemia and nerve disorders from deficiencies are common after gastric bypass; many of these disease have not been seen by doctors for decades and they may not know what to look for. Many physicians have misdiagnosed nerve syndromes caused by deficiencies as diabetic neuropathy. Osteoporosis is common, and on the average you will lose height after gastric bypass due to erosion of the vertebrae. Immediately notify your internist or gastroenterologist if you have abdominal pain. This could be a sign of blockage or leakage from the digestive tract, either of which can be fatal. Also see your internist if you have regurgition. This can lead to severe electrolyte problems and deficiencies. Your surgeon will not be as likely to help, as they tend to minimize problems or blame the patient. The typical weight loss surgeon has thousands of patients he has operated on, and cannot possibly do follow up on all of them. Your best bet is to see a GI specialist (gastroenterologist). --Paul Ernsberger, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Nutrition, Case Western Reserve School of Medicine.

Recently went through gastric by pass 8 mo. ago. I have lost 70 lbs. Interesting how you advise your patients to have a liquid diet for only a few days. My doctor recommended 2 wks. Then I was able to eat puree food for the next 4 wks, and then I was supose to go to 3 meals a day. He also told me that exercise was the key. So he wanted me walking every day increasing my distance. I am on a vit. supplement that is chewable take it 4 times a day, it is called OptiSource, it is made for post Bariatric Surgery. It is made by Walgreens so I can get it just about any where I go. I was also instructed to take an additional Vit.B -complex supplement that is sublingual, and a Iron supplement called Fergon, I found both of these at Walmart. They have been working great, my last blood test were great. It has been about 8 months since my surgery and I am almost down to my weight goal. I was told to make sure when I eat to always eat my protein first, then my vegetables and then I am allowed my carbs. Reason is that because my stomach is smaller I need the good stuff first than veg, and to keep the carb to last because by the time I get to them I will only have room for a small amt. It is hard especially when I go out to eat first thing I will be served is a salad, which I let sit there until my dinner is brought to me, and then I still start with my protein first. This surgery has been a life changing for me. I continue to try and exercise every day.

What is your take on Reliv supplements? We have been taking these for a couple of years and my husband has not had to have his knee replaced because this made it better.
