What's not healthy about guacamole? Most of your lower fat choices are better not because they have less fat but because there are fewer calories. Weight loss is as easy as adding and subtracting calories. You could eat butter all day and still lose weight if you burned more calories then you consumed in a day. However when you are looking food selection of the calories you consume during the day, there are better foods than others and you should target foods with monounsaturated fatty acid rather than saturated. Its not rocket science but you should probably talk to your educated readers assuming they are educated. I eat 30-35% of my caloric intake from MUFAs and have never been more fit and at had a lower BMI than I do now.

Just to throw in my two cents, I have to disagree about avoiding coconut based dishes in Thai and Indian restaurants. Look up coconut milk- its one of the healthiest oils in the planet and it DOES not make you gain weight- I swear its true. In fact, coconut milk actually boosts your metabolism and helps you to LOSE WEIGHT. There are tons of ways coconut milk can help you (from skin to heart care, its all there). So please don't tell people to avoid eating one of the healthiest types of oil on earth.

I was eager to click the topic when I saw it. I'm a fan of many different foods. The first thing I scrolled down the page for, was to see the list. There it was... Italian, French, Chinese, i saw many of the "culture" food i love. Mexican... all of my favorites. I was dissapointed when the list stopped. I saw know African food, no Jamaican food... and as a black man in America... no "Soul Food". It ruined the article for me and compelled me to write this comment. I have no questions as to why, what, or who.... I just wanna say... The media displays so many negative stories about what "Soul Food" can do to your body... or how dangerous it is for your health. The least you could recognize, is that people do eat alot of Soul Food. All races. I felt very disrespect, when i saw that was not recognized. Thai food is even listed, Iv'e never tried it, but I know for sure the "culture" of "African American" food began long before that.... and should definetly be on the list. (THUMBS DOWN)

Interesting, guacamole is full of the good fats, and I wonder why it's on the avoid list

Duh! Nothing new here just plain old common sense. However, many people eat out and want those high fat items; they simply choose to share the entree or have it split when it's bought to the table, take it home and eat as leftovers. Just beware that these days, most entrees are 3 to 4 servings or more!

This is helpful if you're unsure about how certain ethnic foods are prepared. If you didn't grow up in an Indian household, you may not know how much butter is put into their dishes and might order something very calorie-heavy by accident. Joel - I think all soul food is pretty terrible for you, with all the frying, oil and butter, and everyone knows that so it isn't necessary to explicitly state that. It's also not really unique or different, ingredient-wise, than most American food.
