Hi Dr. Furtado, I have had wonderful success by simply coming to terms with the fact that most Americans consume way to many calories eating 3 meals per day and sometimes with snacks on top of 3 meals. I have only been eating 2 meals per day since 2008. I have a really good breakfast and a really good complete dinner sometimes with dessert! I don't feel deprived and feel great! I write a blog about my experience with suggestions and support for my readers as they gain control of their weight. Please visit my blog and comment as to what you think of it. I have read variations of this all my life--count every bit 100 times, etc. etc. And, I think it may have some value. Never-the-less, I suspect that it is only part of the solution. I think that obesity, and especially morbid obesity, has a psychological component, that must be addressed. And, in many cases, I think that component is tied to a genetic predisposition. Thus, this problem is often much more complicated then simply applying a trick solution.

I think your diet and comments are good. The diet will work if you stick with it.I lost 52 lbs.on Weight Watchers Diet", but gained 30 back.It was fun putting the lbs.back on,but miserable! I am going to try your diet and stick with it--slow eating&smaller portions. Thanks & God Bless, Bicycle

Great ideas that I have heard throughout my lifetime! Hearing and doing are two different things though.

I think another problem is that lower income familes buy what they can. And thoes foods have way more calories. Sometimes the foods that are better for you cost more. And more stress right now is a problem for many familes. Its hard to take care of your family when low income is a problem.

We eat pistachios almost everyday. I didn't know it was a principle thing. We just thought the protein was better than the chips when you just feel like grazing. My husband has lost 100 lbs and I have lost 82. Sometimes pistachios are all we eat during a day along with juice plus chewable vitamins (garden blend and vegetable blend) and no this isn't a commercial for those vitamins. Then we have whatever we want within reason for dinner. We are active walking the dogs 2 times a day, mowing our own lawn, golf, just basically living. We are not excercise freaks. But we have a good time and enjoy our new life.

I know this is true. In our fast-paced society, we have forgotten the pleasure of savoring our food. Try eating a pomegranite. It takes a while, but is certainly worth the effort. Just slow down, take time and enjoy eating. Nuts are an excellent example. Your grandparents probably ate very few walnuts at a time, because they had to shell them first, not just stuff their chubby paws into a can-full.

One of the biggest culprits in my regaining most of a 60 lb. weight loss was snacking on pistachios!!!!!

I have always maintained the "Foods-That-Are-A-Project-To-Eat" are part of the answer to weight loss. Things like loster, steamed clams, pomegranates, etc. are, like pistachio nuts, an example of this.

I think if you tell people the truth without sugar coating it, no pun intended, people will finally overcome their bad habits and decide for themselves what's best for them. I think it's time to put warning labels on food that are bad for you like we do for cigarettes. Unfortunately the food industry will ban that idea by buying off congress. Oh well, heart disease, cancer, diabetes and hypertension will continue.
