Please, please check out this site before you give your baby soy formula, feed your kids soy milk, or add lots of soy to your diet. http://www.wholesoystory.com/ Soy is TERRIBLE for people with thyroid problems and can effect your child's hormonal development. These are very serious concerns that merit your taking time to research the issues before you add MORE soy to your diet (I say "more" because processed foods are full of soy products).

Too bad soy also contains estrogen-like chemicals that are harmful to the human body, throwing your hormones out of whack.

Soy is disgusting. If you want to loose weight, eat normal sized portions of nutritional food. Then get off your big lazy behind and get some exercise. Freakin gross disgusting crap, nothing made outta soy is any good. Yuck

If I could get hold of this "doctor", I would tell her to also do research on soy and it's effects on women; how soy can produce high estrogen levels and and start some cancers to grow. My mother had been on soy everything because she thought it was so "healthful" and then she developed breast cancer. The 3 doctors she went to all told her that her body produces high estrogen levels and soy helps this along and the type of cancer she had fed strongly on estrogen so now she can't eat soy anything.

Studies on most things are significantly inconclusive. It's the best method of CYA. That way you can't be held responsible when it doesn't work exactly the same for everyone. I think the best way to figure out if something is worth trying is to look at those who already use the method. Like what you see? Try it yourself. If it doesn't work, it may not be the program, it may be YOU. I tried soy, but I have a sensitivity to it and it isn't going to be my salvation. I'm not suing anyone over it, I'm looking for a different concept to try. I don't need expensive studies to guide me, I use common sense. I didn't need someone to carry out a multi-million dollar study to tell me that pointy-toed high heel shoes would ruin my feet and screw up my back! Don't we believe ourselves anymore? Do we really need 'experts' earning 6-digit incomes to tell us what we could reason out ourselves? Well, maybe they are smarter- they're pulling in the wage and we are paying for it...

The 8th Continent Light Soy (vanilla at 60 cal per cup) and (chocolate at 90 cal per cup) is really tasty. I use the chocolate on my cereal. It turns your cereal into a chocolate dessert basically. I don't like the other soy products much. The soy nuts (toasted soy beans) are OK though. One more advantage for vegetarians is that with the soy drink, they add vitamin B12 which can be lacking in a vegan diet. Silk is very tasty too, but much higher calories than the 8th Continent Light.

Unfermented soy is NOT a helathy food option. Asians eat fermented soy products. The soy hype is just that...hype. If you eat soy, ONLY eat fermented soy foods.

I ADORE edamame. I prefer mine steamed, with no salt added. I'm hoping it's good for you, because I make a meal out of it sometimes.

I was eating a lot of tofu with olive oil, garlic onions and tomatos and chili peppers - all the things that are supposed to be good for you. I also used soy milk in my tea, and occasionally had soy nuts and ate edamame when I had Japanese food. Before I used soy, I had high cholesterol, and my C-reactive protein (which shows inflammation in the body and can indicate rheumatoid problems, immune deficiencies) was high as well as my cardio crp (a precursor to heart disease) along with homocysteine. Everything lowered after a year on soy...I'm at a low risk of heart issues on my cardio crp where before I was high risk - my cholesterol went from 254 to 205 in 12 mos. I was thrilled. Also, my bone density completely flipped. I had osteopoenia, and now I have bones that are better than a 30 year old. So those are the things I believe soy fixed. HOWEVER, I have always felt like I had too much estrogen as when I hit menopause I didn't have a single hot flash, but felt like I was always PMS...I gained a lot of weight, and developed insomnia, anxiety, mood swings...At this last mammogram, after a year on soy, I developed a mass in my breast. I had a core needle biopsy and luckily it was benign. All these years, I never had breast problems, and now I am wondering if it is from the soy. It looks like soy might fix one thing and break another....Now I only use soy milk in my tea and that's it. It scared me, and I wouldn't want to endure another biopsy....or all the radiation from all those mammograms. My daughter drinks soy milk, and she is 14, and I'm wondering if that is screwing up her periods as she is irregular. I don't like cow's milk at all, and it caused tremendous allergies for her...so I will have to look and see if she should can the soy or not at her age.

what a waste of time this article was. like everyone didn't already know that soy protein has less fat and calories than red meat. how about telling us something we didn't already know.

dave, I disagree. Miso soup is quite delicious as is tofu if it's cooked decently (ie not cooked as fake meat, but as something in it's own right). Though taste is a very subjective category, so to each their own. Though I agree with the rest of your post.

Thanks for this article. Soy products do have many health benefits, and it's too bad the meat and dairy industries are creating deceptive sites to scare people away from soy.
