One thing you need to remember most people are not allergic the first time they come into contact with something. Your body builds antibodies to the specific item. So you might not have sever reactions at first. But allergies can and often do progress. Often to a deadly reaction. It is important if your reactions progress quickly to a particular trigger, talk to your doctor about an Epi-pen. In the case of sever reactions you sometimes have only minutes to react. I am not a physician, just a parent of a child who has sever reactions to insect stings. Have learned the hard way that it could be the next sting that takes him from me.

Most boxes of hair dye include plastic gloves and not latex gloves.

I am allergic to latex and have to avoid certain foods and every one listed in this article I have had reactions to. I also have to carry and Epi-pen for servere reactions. The one thing that I have also learned is if I go out to dinner to ask if they cook using latex gloves and ask them to use non-latex if they have them otherwise I do not eat at that place.

The information in this article has been known for some time. Try doing an internet search for latex and cross reactivity. The amount of information is definitely not lacking. I began having reactions to fruits like bananas and mangoes in my late teens. The reactions grew worse as I got older. When I began working for a hospital, I was required to undergo a physical which included a latex allergy test. The test showed that I was mildly allergic to latex, and the nurse assisting me explained many people with seasonal and food allergies also tend to have a latex allergy. I have had seasonal allergies my whole life, and my food allergies have grown worse, but I've never had a reaction to latex. To be safe, I avoid it. Everyone reacts differently. Some people react instantly to balloons while others can handle them with no problem. Some people with the allergy have no reaction to foods at all. It really just depends, and I think that's why it's so hard to pin down this problem. I just hope someone develops a shot or something soon because I terribly miss fruit. :(

So happy to see this report! I didn't know about the latex-food connection until my latex allergic daughter had a severe reaction to an avacado. The food allergy and anaphalxis network is an excellent source for more info about cross allergens!

People with latex allergies also need to be VERY careful with handling WHOLE pineapple. The outer skin contains NATURAL LATEX and can be deadly.

I am also allergic to latex, and I found out the hard way that I am severely allergic to bananas. While recovering from surgical wisdom tooth extraction in 2002, I ate some mixed fruit Jello that had "less than 2% of natural flavorings," one of which was banana (a family member made it for me). Over the course of 5 hours, my blood pressure dropped from 110/72 to 71/51. Thank goodness I had a personal BP monitor at home. A month later, I was helping my sister clean up my nephew's high chair after he had eaten baby oatmeal that was mixed with bananas. Not realizing this fact, I took his oatmeal-covered spoon in one hand and began to wipe off his tray. The skin on my fingertips felt like they were on fire, which made me throw the spoon and scrub my fingers for 5 minutes straight. To this day, I don't touch bananas, much less avocados and the others(tomato sauce doesn't bother me, though).

avacado is also something you should not eat if you are allergic to latex. As someone who has to see a doctor twice a week because of my laundry list of allergies.. please believe me! If you have any allergies it is always best to ask your doctor. I was amazed at how much healthier I was after I learned about my allergies and how to avoid them!

Has anyone ever thought that if we didn't freak out so bad over "germs" then maybe we wouldn't have such a dramatic increase in allergies? Not to mention, with the advent of central heat and air into almost every home and public building, we are no longer exposed from birth to all the airborne allergents which can also be linked to the explosion of people with allergies. I personally didn't start having allergy problems until I moved into a home with central heat and air in my teens. Not to mention at school in the spring and early fall, the windows were open. (I can hear people gasping over that one.) My K-12 campus I attended did not get central heat/air until after I graduated in 1986. Now, I live on anti-histamines in my home and office with allergin reducing filters on the air intakes. Makes me wonder if I had never lived this way, if I would have ever developed the allergies I have so horribly today.
