With summer in full swing and fresh fruits and vegetables plentiful, it's not unusual to have a salad, either as your main meal or on the side, almost every day. Salads can bring so many different foods to the table, depending on whether you include fruits, berries, and nuts or just the classic lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
For the most part, the basic salad is ideal for cutting calories and adding fiber and nutrients. However, once you add the salad dressing that can become a whole different story! If you're not a fan of fat-free dressings, one serving (usually 2 tablespoons) of full-fat, creamy salad dressing such as Thousand Island or blue cheese can add an average of 120 calories and 10 grams of fat to your salad. My personal favorites are low-fat vinaigrette salad dressings, which on average provide about half the calories and fat of full-fat options.
This summer there's one more way to keep the calories in your salad in check: a salad spritzer. This new spray-on salad dressing allows you to control your portions and still get all the great flavor and taste of a vinaigrette salad dressing with minimal calories and fat. Makers of the spritzer claim it contains just 1 calorie per spray and suggest a serving size of 10 sprays. Even if you'd like a little extra dressing and you double the serving size, you're still adding only 20 calories to an otherwise healthy meal.
If you're looking for a new way to top your salads this summer, this is one more option you might consider.
