During food preparation, I rarely wash my hands after visiting the rest room. This really isn't an issue, it it?

My husband and I can't agree. I think we can put "warm" food in the fridge and he says we have to wait until it's cold or it will spoil. Any one know the right answer??

Yes, I saw this talked about recently on a thing about food safety. It's a common misconception that you are supposed to wait until it's cold. The cooling down period is when the temperature drops to unsafe levels at which bacteria thrive. You are supposed to put food directly into the fridge as soon as possible.

I do hope this helps everyone on this website. My nutritionist suggest that after you use and wash your cutting boards, you put them in your microwave oven for 45 seconds. Microwaves use radiation to cook and when you put your cutting boards in there, it kills ALL the bacteria left on them. I do it all the time and it works wonderfully. Have a nice summer everyone!!

Got to love this paranoid society... wipe, clean, disinfect, irradicate. Doesn't everyone know that bacteria are a normal part of everyday life ? The more you ingest the less prone to infection one becomes. I eat rare meat, raw eggs, sushi, sometimes cut veggies on the same board I cut meat on (oh God no).. I am healthier than anyone I know and NEVER get sick. All those Howard Hughes types who use wipes and meticulously clean everything KILL ME! While you're all busy cleaning and being paranoid... I am enjoying a nice RARE grilled hamburger, steak or salmon. Despite the paranoia and FUD (fear uncertainty and doubt) that all these safety nazis like to spread... eating food that has sat out more than an hour or two will not make you sick. So go ahead... clean everything, disinfect, put on your helmets when you ride your bikes, seat belts when you drive, arm you airbags and die from worry!

Regarding putting warm food into the fridge right away - the only thing to be concerned about is that if it is really warm it will raise the temperature of the food/fridge. Just don't put it directly next to something like milk! Great tips everyone, thank you!

settle down desertadventure05. While I totally see your point, there is a middle ground that can be reached. We should all be careful but not finatic.

jazwyngroup is right! I had found the Chef Yossi products some time ago at relaxdepot.com and they are great. My husband uses the hand towelettes when he bar-b-ques and they are the best thing for safe and clean cooking. They get rid of that raw meat smell which I can't stand and they sanitize your hands too. Great choice for safety and cleanliness in the kitchen!

I have to totally agree with desertadventure. First of all if you buy higher quality hamburger you can eat it rare. Growing up as a kid after Thanksgiving and Christmas, picnics in the moutains, food was left out til it was eaten. None of us ever got sick from it let alone died. Maybe your stomach aches from the worry.

Sunlover_liz - actually SC Johnson used to make disposable cutting sheets but I don't think they do anymore. If you have a close-out store near you, you might be able to find them. I found some at Big Lots and stocked up on them. I like to use them for camping and outdoor cooking.
