...and instead of a six pack of Budweiser 12-once cans (870 calories), replace it with a six pack of Michelob Ultra containing just 570 calories and only 15.6 grams of carbohydrates.

It's a shame that given all of the information regarding links between artificial sweeteners and cancer, that a person with a public voice of authority is still promoting their use as part of a healthy diet. Additionally, these sweeteners cause the same blood-glucose/insulin response as real sugar leading to the conversion of available carbohydrates (sugars) into fat storage anyway. A better rule of thumb is to opt for water. Instead of orange juice, have an orange and benefit from the fibre and vitamins in their complete, natural state. There are toxins surrounding us in our environment, we do not need to knowingly add more poison to our bodies through the foods and liquids we consume.

How about drinking water, tearing in to some Hawaiian sugar cane and chewing on some tea leaves or maybe sucking on some cacao beans for a chocolate fix? Those looking to lose weight didn't become overweight simply because they wanted to. There are factors that lead to obesity and strong cravings are one of them. So if a person opts for a drink with artificial sweeteners over one that packs the calories with real sugar so as to satisfy their craving and get an edge on losing weight (at least on a psychological basis) then good for them. In the mean time I'll be chewing on a wad of coca leaves. It's a lot more natural and healthier than a plain ol' cola.

I totally disagree with much of the advice given in this "column",what credintials do you have that capicate you to give such advice? For example - replace an 8oz serving of orange juice with water sweetened with ARTIFICAL sugar substitute - why not at least use pure honey which might add a few calories but is MUCH healthier, and if the aqdvice is to replace FRESH juice, then that is definately not sound, healthy advice. Why not make lemonade using fresh lemons or limes and tea using tea leaves instead of expensive tea bags and sweeten both again with REAL honey, not the popular brands found in most supermarkets most of which have sugar added. I would find it very hard to follow your advice and stay healthy!!!

You know the risks associated with aspertain and other artificial sweeteners outway the bennifit. I agree with the other posts. You should have "watter" and hold off on the sweetners. If you want to lose those unwanted pounds you need to watch what you eat. A lot of foods have high amounts of fat. Fast food is one of the worst. If you have a salid hold the dressing use lemon instead. There is no use drinking a dite soda and packing on the pounds with oil in some saild dressings, french fries or those in and out burgers everyone seems to love. Stay away from the grease and fat. Watch the calories and excersize. Simply diteing is not enough to lose those pounds. Best of luck to everyone.

Food and the overconsumption in our country is a huge problem. A life of abundance has become a life of poor choices for most of us. We can learn to practice simplicity in all things and appreciate our abundance without the overindulgences. A disciplined and orderly life is a large undertaking, but we all have the ability to be our best if we just want to be our best.

I think that it is wrong to tell over weight people or for that matter anyone to use fake sugar sustitute. It is well documented, that the stuff is BAD for us. Please update your education. Exercise and natural sugars/honey used in moderation, are much better for the body.

You are all right! After years of using artificial sweeteners, I realized that any sweet beverages stimulate my appetite and I eat more when drinking sweet beverages. I suggest that we move towards health as we lose weight. Once a person loses about ten pounds, detoxification becomes useful. Lots of toxins are stored in fat cells and people get sick, have gallbladder attacks, or just feel yuck and lose their motivation and regain the weight. Water, lemon water, herbal teas for detox, support the bodies effort to clean up the toxins set loose from burning fat . Water is needed for the kidneys to funtion properly. Sweetners add work for the kidneys and liver. However, some people will abandon all efforts at weight loss without them. If you are an all or nothing person and can handle becoming a water only person, go for it. Whatever you do, get up to speed on your water drinking and never substitute any other beverage for water. You can add other non-caloric beverages as a treat, just be sure that you fulfill your water requirments.

whitoakmiracle makes a lot of sense. This discussion goes right along with Cheryl's previous post. I have heard more and more about artificial sweeteners not being good for you. Is Splenda really made by chlorinating sugar? I think you should drink more water and flavor it with real fruit if you need something that has more taste (then eat the remaining fruit). I have been in a wellness plan now for two years and I don't even think of being "in a plan" anymore because you learn to "live the principles". I lost weight, kept it off for 1 1/2 years, and am healthier now as a result. My wellness program also encourages people to take a little responsibility for their own lives. Everyone has the power to make better choices. It pays off big time!
