Hi I just wanted to say I am 59 years old have 3 children and i had a hysterctomy years ago and also a accident which left me partially paralyzed and have been in a wheelchair for 25 years .I weighed about 120 when it happened and I am 5 feet 7 inches anywhay when I came out of the hospital 4 1/2 months later I weighed nearly 160 pounds . I then after about a year lost down to about 125 -130 but then I lost completely to 100 -105 and looked like a stick but felt good and was good on my arms transferring myself anyway I also smoked during most of this time .I ate everything and at anytime late night whatever but in 1997 I got sick pneumonia while in the hospital they discovered I have emphysema well I quit smoking but kept on with the eating and before I knew it I had grown about 4 sizes and my daughter was no longer able to hold me on a scale with her to weigh and so I do not know my exact weight however it is fat !!!!I do know I wore 28 or 29 waist jeans then and size 7/9 ( I have hips no matter my weight? but went to a 12/14 however about 2 months ago I said enough of this so I have began a diet plan of my own making one I know I will stay with and can afford and have lost a few inches as can tell by my clothes . I watch my sugar intake ( diabetes in my family ) I watch my calorie intake ,I do some exercises but am going to extend to more of them however I do not stand nor walk at all .I buy those 100 calorie snacks , fat free things , I eat whole wheat bread , very few fries or potatoes once a week maybe but even then very small amounts , I find by doing this I still satisfy my sweet tooth and my essentials of nutritions as I eat vegs and fruits to and cottage cheese I have a large mix of stuff but it seems to work and i do not feel I am deprived of anything and have been able to stay with it and not feel like oooooooha diet ...........so I think a diet is each persons own choice and what may work for one won't another but keep trying is the main thing because for a few weeks I was not gaining or losing but now can tell the inches are gradually coming off and this is a plan I can stay on the rest of my life by just being aware of what is best for me . I wish all who ate trying to lose weight the very best and God bless alll of you ....

First of all, low carb diets such as Atkins NEVER encourage eating transfats and do encourage a great deal of foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals (such as green veggies and cheese). Saturated fats can be eaten (and pass right through the system) if you stick strickly to the diet and avoid all refined white flour, sugar, etc. I lost 60 pounds initially on the Atkins diet and my cholesterol levels improved along with my blood pressure/sugar etc. Low carb diets are often misunderstood as the unhealthy eating of nothing but fat and having huge portions, but I would encourage those who are interested to be sure and know exactly what you are doing before you start.

Three years ago, my BMI was 24, I was exhausted. My triglycerides were 174. My doctor told me to eat less fat. Instead. I went low-carb/high-fat, lost 30 lbs in 3 months and 10 more lbs over time. My BMI is now 19.2. I feel better, my lipid profile is dramatically better, I have more energy, and I haven't had a cold in 3 years even though I stopped taking a multivitamin 3 yeas ago. If I had listened to my doctor, I would now be overweight and full-blown diabetic. Luckily, a friend (a nurse and a diabetic) recommended that I read The Diabetes Solution by Richard K. Bernstein, M.D. So be careful WHICH doctor you listen to!
