If you are really concerned about his health find a program of body weight exercises along with cardio . Burn calories with exercise, stength train first then do cardio, bike, walk etc.

Hi I am glad tha you are aware of this at a young age and you are trying to be resposible. According to www.cdc.gov, about 10-15% of 6-17 years old children are obese. Being obese and wanting to slim down is not all about your appearances. Obesity can cause other disease like cardiovascular/heart disease.

If your child is overweight go see a doctor, they are the medical professionals. Perhaps your child has a metabolic issue (rare), physicians can test for this or other genetic disorders (again, very rare). In the absence of one of these condition remember when energy in (food) exceeds energy out (exercise) weight is gained. Obesity harms children, (diabetes, heart disease, social osterization). As parents we have a duty to ensure that our children develop free from these harms. Do not neglect this duty, consult a physician.

Tha is absolutely correct. Your energy expedinture have to exceed your caloric intake for you to loose weight or your caloric intake and expedinture have to equal one another to let your weight remain the same. How did your son got to where he is now? What is he having for his meals and how often? When was the last time you consulted a doctor?

I have a grandbaby who is overweight, but mom being really busy cannot just go out and get foods thatare healthy, which are time consuming to cook when you work 8 to ten hours a day nd is a single parent. A few of the overwight children are from lowincome single parent households. Because of that, making ends meet can be hard. I have a saying" Youget what youcan pay for" and it does include food.

That is an interesting prospective because she can simply make other arrangement. If I may ask you, what is the child having for snacks and does she use or the caretaker uses the tv as a "babysitter"? In regards to the food choices that we give to our children, they will take what is being offer to tham. If we only offer them fruits as a snack then they will make their choices from the stuff that are being offer. If a kid has to make a decision between candy chips or fruit, of course they would go for the candy or chips. I think as a parent we are responsible on what we give our children as well. I understand that it is very hard to be a single and prepare a healthy dinner, however see if she can start in baby steps and offer her child healthy snacks alternatives. By the way, you also mention about some low income families having a high rate of over weight children. As a consumer, we all know that it is cheaper to unhealthy food then it is to buy healthy or organic food. A chicken dinner from Banquet is only $0.97 at Wal-mart whereas a Lean Cuisine meal would cost about $2 or more.

There is a lack of physical inactivity in the schools that doesnt allow kids to expend any energy that is converted from food. Physical inactivity is the number one target that needs to be addressed According to Healthy People 2010 the recommended daily activity is 30 minutes of of moderate physical activity for 3 or more days a week. Also to include a healthy diet refer to the new food pyramid guideline.
