I stopped smoking about 10 weeks ago "cold turkey". I run 4 times a week 3-5 miles and do core strengthening exercises. Since I quit smoking I have gained 5 lbs and my cravings for cigarets have not lessened... I do eat more snacks because of these cravings. Is this usual to have such strong cravings still after 10 weeks?

I quit smoking 9 weeks ago, and to keep the weight gain to minimum, I decided to lose weight at the same time. This helps to distract me from smoking because I am counting calories and exercising instead of worrying about smoking. works for me I've lost 8 pounds( not much but a start)

This is in response to post #2. Congratulations on your choices. I want to say up front that I am co-founder of the LoneStart Wellness Initiative, a behavioral-based weight loss and wellness strategy for individuals and employee groups. This is not a pitch for LoneStart. What I do want to point out is that we've had participants who have lost weight and decided to use the same principles to quit smoking--sort of the reverse of what you're doing--but they find it works. Both smoking cessation and weight loss require willpower--they are lifestyle habits that take time to develop--and take time to change. But it's important to our individual health, a company's fiscal health, and our country's health that we all find ways to make the changes that will lead to "living well." Best of luck in your efforts!

I quit 8 weeks ago. I gained 18 pounds and it is finally turning around and coming off. I started walking a mile each day on the treadmill at lunch and doing workout routine at home. 10 years ago, I quit for 4 years. I gained 50 pounds and did not try to exercise to take it off. When I started smoking again, I lost it. This time I am trying to do it the right way.

I quit a little over a year ago and put on a lot of weight as a result, a whopping 60 lbs. Some people use weight as an excuse to continue smoking, but even though I put on so much weight, giving up smoking is the best decision I ever made. At first, I felt that I was never going to lose the extra weight I gained. I tried several times but nothing did it. I just didn't try hard enough. I have now been watching what I eat for the past 6 weeks, and I have lost more than 10 lbs.
