Well, these all seem like good ideas for most people, but not all. I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for those of us who live out in the sticks.... I live in a tiny little town, we don't have a fitness center, hiking trails, or YMCA. There are no errands close to home that we could walk or bike to. There's not even a playground within 15 miles. I work 40 hours a week, and my children are ages 6 and 2. I've been thinking about this a great deal lately, but cannot seem to find an idea that would be possible.

make your own back yard obstacle course...kitchen step stool to climb over...foot tub of water to splash thru...old tire to go over...a post or log to walk or crawl over....if you have a tree put up a rope swing... a can or ball to kick...dirt to dig in...mud cakes and toad houses to make....have fun........

hey beyonduplication, set apart atleast one day a week where you can go tromping down roads or go swimming. Scared about swimming with the little one... just get a little life jacket and enjoy yourselves!

I bought a razor scooter similar to the one my 6yr old daughter has. We go for rides almost daily and we BOTH look forward to that time together while getting exercise in at the same time.

On Dr. Sear's leankids.com website there is an excellent playlist and great suggestions for promoting/tracking children's fitness.

If I lived in the sticks, I would let my kids paint more outside. Hang up a white old sheet and let them paint away.

Ideas: Inside the house: 1) Turn on radio or favorite CDs and dance around. 2) There are kids dancing aerobics cds. 3) Get a Yoga DVD and do a few minutes. Outside: 1) Nature walk/jog/bike down country roads. 2) Take soccer ball on walk. 3) Get nerf baseball and bat or tennis ball and racquet.

hi i am11 years old and no ido not have any children i just clicked on this particular one because i get really board and my mommy doesnt want me to stay inside so i end up going outside and burning to death. i have a pool and next door neighbors but the next door neighbors are all young and a bit boring so i play with my twin sister shannen dont get me wrong thats so not boring but it gets really hot and i just want to go inside and take a nap and if we invite one friend then one of us seem to get a little left out. because we all just like games for just two people. we cant play games like hide'n'go seek because my mom doesnt like us in the front yard because of things that have happened in the pass [my sister and i have been a little naughty and so we have no neighbor friends except for babies] but your ideas are great so thank you for them sincererly, shaneece

I love this article. I will be very busy next week with school from 11 to 7 monday through Friday which will keep me away from my son. I will see him for a few hours before I leave for school in the morning. I think he would love to join a gymnastics class especially if its with his mommy.

Our family of four goes to the gym atleast twice a week. We start off at the track togather and walk / run/ time each other, etc. After that my husband let's me work-out for about 45 minutes or so by myself in the gym, weights, cardio machines, etc. He takes the kids (boy 8, girl 11) to the gymnasium to shoot baskets/ play basketball. When I am done, we switch, he works out for 45 minutes or so. I take the kids to the pool to swim. Everyone wins, the kids love it and can't wait to go back. Family time and fitness all in one! We also let the kids take turns and bring a friend every other week. Their friends love it too!
