I gave up long ago in thinking I could eat healthy on the run at fast food restaurants. The only healthy fast food place I consider is Subway. That is the reason why I hardly ever eat at fast food places for breakfast. I instead get up early and prepare a healthy bowl of oatmeal with fruit in it. No added fat, sugar, or salt.

Even Subway can sneak up on you. Brian Wansink, author of "Mindless Eating" and food psychologist, calls this the "Health Halo." I added up the calories in my favorite Subway Sandwich (foot long spicy italian w/ bacon, chipolte sauce and veggies) and it comes out to something like 1500 calories for one sandwich. I mainly eat low-fat yogurt or cottage cheese for breakfast, or Kashi Go Lean w/ Soy milk. When I have to eat on the run, I"d rather hit a gas station for a V-8 and a healthy granola bar (since I know there are unhealthy ones out there) than try to deal with fast-food breakfasts.

I'm a big fan of either instant breakfast shakes or slimfast for a satisfying breakfast that is fast. I don't know about anyone else but having to be out the door by 7am, my belly hasn't even woke up and the shake will satisfy me until about 10am when i have a light healthy snack such as cheese, nuts, or yogurt. Works for me!!

I stay away from breakfast shakes and slimfast in general because I am allergic to Nutrasweet. My best on the run breakfast is either two hardboiled eggs and a piece of fruit or a Stoneyfield Yogurt Smoothie. Stoneyfield makes a regular and light version and neither one has high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners and their organic.

Couldn't agree more with mkatz2m. Oatmeal is MAGIC. I eat one packet of instant daily with a little Equal sprinkled on top, no milk. I make it a little mushy and often will just drink it down. You'd be surprised how filling it is! As for getting stuck with F. Food choices, prevention can help. Stick a packet or two of oatmeal in with your stuff. You can always ask for an extra cup and some hot water. As for Subway I disagree with DancHawk. You can eat a sub and not totally wreck your diet. But use your head not your hunger! Don't get the sub with the bacon and sauce. Check Subway's web site for their nutrition chart. I did and it HELPS! The experts preach good diet and exercise. EDUCATION also is a big plus. One other thing, I used to be one of those people that hated to eat breakfast because I just didn't feel like it. Sound familiar? I discovered, in my case, it was because I was snacking too much and too late at night. When I can stop eating at a decent time, say 7 or 8 PM for a 12 AM bedtime I wake up feeling so good and within an hour of waking I start to feel my appetite again. One packet of oatmeal might not sound like a lot but we have to retrain our eating habits. I was raised old school. Big breakfast, Big lunch, big dinner, where eating was a reward. But eating isn't entertainment. A dinner out might be social but grabbing breakfast before you begin your day is about making sure the care has gas in it. Try looking at it like that and forgive my rambling!

I know there is a big culture shock with food choices after what you are used to in California. You CAN eat smart and healthy wherever you are, it is just a bit more of a challenge. Try to stay away from fast food. Make smart choices at a grocery store, and you can find low fat foods that are easy to take along to school or work or wherever you are instead of buying fried fast food. Try lowfat yogurt, cheese sticks made of reduced fat mozzarella, fresh fruit. You can find cut-up and ready to eat veggies and fruits, too.. and there are a lot of low fat snacks that are tasty and good for you. You are very smart to recognize how unhealthy the food around you is. Check the latest issure of National Geographic for a very scary map showing where in the USA we have the highest incidence of heart attack-- the fat fried south. The grocery store, not the restaurant, is your friend!

This is great EXCEPT there are no recipes or real food suggestions for an "on the go GOOD breakfast"!

I tell you the best way to eat is to have a shake in the morning or oatmeal. It is the best way to go. Subway is great. But stick to the turkey with all the veggies and light on the vinegar and oil. And protein bars for a snack. Or yogart with live cultures and whey protein. Eating healthy is a choice and you refrain. I go all week eating sensible and on the weekends I eat what ever I want. You have to reward yourself or you will lose control and scarf what ever. So eat that pizza on the weekend just order it with veggies and don't overdo it. Moderation is key!!!

I think that a glass or two of wine once or twice a week is a good way to keep healthy as well.
