In canned salmon, how do you know what's wild and what's farm-raised?

I'd bet that canned salmon is farm fresh. Try a visit to a coastal town where they actually send fishing boats out to sea. Pick up some expensive salmon and taste the difference.

Farmed fish is the best thing since sliced bread for those on limited budgets. I lived in Alaska for ten years and ate lots of fresh and farmed salmon. Unless the salmon is cooked fresh the difference in taste isn't great, especially if its smoked which most Alaska wild salmon that the locals eat is. I can't wait until the debate about farmed or wild fish is as relevant as the debate about farmed or wild poultry, beef and pork.

As the population of the earth grows out of proportion the farming of fish and seafood will become even more necessary to keep from depleting all the species from natural waters. I've never done a taste test between wild and farmed salmon, but the fact that it is farm raised means that it is plentiful enough in grocerie stores that I can buy it when I want it.

Since the report about the high PCB levels in farm raised salmon, our family doesn't eat it. We only eat "wild" salmon, even if that means we eat it less often. Just our personal choice.

in addition to PCBs you're usually getting anti-biotics and other stuff too. From a health perspective, wild is almost always multiples better than farmed, irrespective of whether or not it is considered a relevant or pressing argument.
