We already knew that not enough sleep is bad for us. The headline for the article "Too Much Sleep: Is It Possible?" suggested that you were going to tell us the answer to that question after reading the article...the question is still left unanswered.

I rarely get more than 6-7 hours a night. When I get a good night sleep, about 8hrs for me. I feel pretty good. Most days I feel good on 6-7 hours but am extra alert and clear with 8. After a few days of 8hrs I really feel good! I don't use an alarm clock either, I usually wake with daylight. Even when the shades are shut, I know its daylight somehow. I just don't have the luxury or the interest in getting more than 8 hrs sleep. My girlfriend can sleep for 9+ and still feels tired. She sleeps pretty sound at night unless I disturb her with my tossing and turning.

I like this article. I particularly like the way you relate your experiences of some of these tendencies to some common experiences.

You are right on! I fall into this category and sometimes feel as if I am sleeping my life away. I sometimes sleep 10 to 12 hours at a time but I find instead of feeling really rested I wake up feeling tired. I agree that sleep can be used to escape from reality or boredom. I've also noticed that the more bummed out I am the more likely I am to want to go to bed. I swear I feel like this was written for me cause I also play the weekend catch up when I get a really busy week. This is especially true during end of semester finals. I can usually go about two days without sleep but then I need to crash for about 10 or 12 hours. The one thing you don't address which I'd like some info on is people who stay up all night and sleep all day. I don't go to bed until 4am at the earliest and usually it's more like 6 or 7am, then I sleep at least until 3 or 4pm. Is there help for me? Does it matter if I sleep in the day? I don't have to stay up all night, I don't work the night shift, I'm a graduate student so really my schedule is pretty flexible. I really don't mind being a night owl but is that why I tend to sleep so much? Would changing my diet help? Anyone have any ideas?

no, not helpful...what ARE the health risks? if it is unclear if there are any, this article's title is very misleading.

i cant sleep naturaly anymore if i do ill only sleep 3 hours and ive become dependent on sleep aids to get 6 to 8 hours a night, my father suffers from sleep disorders, my grandmother did aswell, i think its a genetic problem thats passed down just like any other disorder, i think it was something to do with trauma or fear and by this i truly believe that memories just like genes are passed down because sometimes i feel fear for no reason and odd thoughts of life and death cross my mind, i think my mind is trying to recall events that have been passed down to me genetically, this explains dejavu and the feeling of reincarnation, some people believe theyve lived in another time, sleeping disorders are passed down just like that
