Studies show that kids are receiving 40% of their calories a day through snacks and beverages! This is not necessarily a bad thing, if the snacks and beverages are of high quality.

When you have a torn ACL, the unstable "trick knee" can get into other troubles. You are more prone to cartilage tears and also joint surface injuries that can lead to arthritis.

Are Your Feet Getting Bigger?

Once you are an adult, and fully grown, you will not gain height (unfortunately), but your feet can actually change size. The bones themselves do not actually elongate or grow in length. The foot itself can, however, become longer and wider. This is not just an optical illusion but happens because of certain structural changes that occur to the ligaments and muscles of the foot with age.

Tiger's "Golfer's Knee" - A Common Ailment

With the U.S. Open heading into full gear, all eyes are again on golf. Also, now that summer has arrived, more and more average Joe's (and Jane's) are hitting the links. Most are ecstatic, some are limping.

When Tiger Woods stepped up to his first competitive tee shot since having arthroscopic knee surgery eight weeks ago, all eyes were on him, and his knees. I was not at all surprised that his first shot lifted off a large chunk of turf and went far far out of play. Not typical for Tiger, but fairly typical with someone whose knee is not quite 100%.

Stiff Joints? Get Moving!

In my last blog entry, I talked about the loss of elasticity in your body's tissues with age. Sometimes your muscles and tendons stay limber with age, but one or more joints may get tight or stiff and lose mobility, or range of motion (ROM).

With age, you must spend more time working on flexibility. Most adults especially need help with four typically tight spots: front shoulder, lower back, hamstrings, and calves.

Arthroscopy is one of the most common surgical procedures done in this country. It is almost a rite of passage for so many athletes and active individuals, especially the baby boomer population.

Vibration plates have become the new new thing in fitness. Several companies now make vibration training devices that shake your whole body like a milkshake in a blender.
