With 170 vibration platforms on the market (a lot of them very cheaply made) the consumer needs to beware!! Very few have been designed and engineered for heavy usage and break down on a regular basis. Final point: Within 3-5 years every rehab facility, physical therapist and chiropractors offices will have some form of vibration therapy. Solid research will be coming out in droves over the next 1-2 years.

Problems with Yahoo allowing posts here the last few days. I never heard of vibration therapy but it sure sounds interesting. I can see its main use for athlete recovery but I would think mostly mega gyms would have the best of equipment like this, other than someone like a marathon runner. It does appear to me too that the advantage is healing circulation to overworked or damaged muscles, connective tissue, and joints. I would also like to try it for my arthritic knee. Keep these interesting, motivational, educational, and valuable blog posts coming Dr. Nick. I always look forward to them. :-)

Vibration causes inflammation, most people already have too much of that. Best to leave that kind of machine for astronauts and the elderly.

I will say vibrating chairs and stuff are comfortable but I suggest using them in short term. After a while, my muscles get so comfortable I want to go to sleep.

To: nocy What about the millions of North Americans with various medical conditions and disabilities who cannot 'walk more'. What is their alternative? Maybe they can 'crawl' more! Vibration therapy will be mainstream in the next 3-5 years in geriatric and rehabilitation settings.

There are several studies being ran on the vibration idea, but nobody has a solid conclusion. As for proprioception, you may have minimal gains, but not what you would get on balance boards or bosu balls. There is much more effective fitness equipment to invest in to get high quality results. Vibration scares me because of joint stability and safety. Does it work something like a massage, probably so. But, over time shaking of joints I would say will lead to injury once you place your knee or joints under load. A quality Personal Trainer will lead you through a routine much more effective and proven safe then this idea.

To: Fresh No one questions the ability of personal trainers. But, how are these individuals helping the 84 % of N.A.'s who do not join health clubs or engage in conventional exercise for whatever reasons? Vibration training allows people who cannot or will not exercise conventionally a realistic option, which may lead to a more active lifestyle. Also, not all vibration devices shake the heck out of the user. The higher quality devices are not stressful on the joints, especially when the person is under supervision by a trainer who understands proper positioning etc.
