The short answer seems to be: no! A recent revolution to hit the cosmetics world suggests that we may be on the brink of a safe and effective way to lengthen eyelashes permanently.
Here's the story: For years, doctors have used eye drops with ingredients known collectively as prostaglandins in the treatment of glaucoma. (Prostaglandins are a type of hormone derived from fatty acids.) It quickly became clear that a side effect of the treatment was longer, thicker, darker eyelashes. (You'd be amazed at how many great cosmetic discoveries are accidental. Botox, for example, was first used as a treatment for certain muscular eye disorders -- only later did doctors notice its cosmetic effects!) Enter the cosmetics companies. It now seems that several brands were including a prostaglandin-like ingredient in mascara to benefit from those lash-boosting effects. The FDA has not verified or approved the assertion that such ingredients lengthen lashes, however, which forced cosmetics companies to retract the claim. Still, the products remain on the market (whether their formulas were changed as well as their claims is unclear).Prostaglandin-like ingredients are believed to be safe, although more research will certainly be necessary before they can hit the marketplace full force. The primary potential side effect is irritation or darkening of the eyelids. If you believe you are using this new generation of mascara and notice any unwanted side effects, discontinue use immediately.
I certainly expect that we'll be hearing much more about this technology in the future.
Wishing you great lashes!
