I use Proactive on my face. I have sensitive skin and am allergic to Benzoyl Peroxide which is an ingredient of Proactive. I use the "Gentle" version for sensitive skin. The active ingredient in this is "Salicylic acid". I think it is fine. It works great. They can't be #1 unless it works!

DON'T BUY THE EXPENSIVE STUFF! If you walk down the skin care isle and actually read the backs of the boxes ALLLLL Salicylic Acid products are 2% S.A. The $3.00 4oz bottle of Target brand is 100% the same thing as the $10.00 3oz bottle of name brand. SAME THING! I've also found that when I use the lotion with Salicylic Acid it helps wounds heal faster too. I have HORRIBLE skin and if I scratch my arm too much it will acutally cause little wounds. Since I started using Salicylic Acid Lotion I see healing over night as apposed to days and days. I have never had any bad side effects to using it but I'm not sure if there is a warning about using it on broken skin. 9X out of 10 if it prevents and/or heals acne it also helps close wounds and prevent infections in SMALL wounds. I use if from head to toe.

I use 2% Salicylic Acid facial pads. I have hyper-pigmentation on the sides of my neck, as well as rocacea(sp?). Over time, it has worked well for me. My 12 year old daughter uses 0.5% "Sensitive Skin" type Salicylic Acid facial pads - available in many brands, including: Clearasil, Oxy, Noxema and in house store brands. You won't find these pads at dept. store counters - look at the grocery store or local drug store. They're cheap, effective and you can choose the strengh of Salicylic Acid that is just right FOR YOU!!

Do you have any comments about appropriate cosmetics for each skintype? I would love to know if there is a difference and what is best. Maria

#22 MBotta98 on As we grow older, our skin care needs change. The skin is the first to show symptoms of fatigue, stress, poor diet, environmental assault and , of course, age. Whether the skin is dry, combination or oily, we all have the same basic needs when it comes to taking care of our skin. Every person needs the basics of skin care which includes: • Cleansing • Moisturizing • Protecting • Exfoliating As we grow older, our skin care needs change. Where a skin care regimen was basically viewed as a simple maintenance program in the past, now we can use the basic steps that were once viewed as mere maintenance and deliver age and damage specific benefits to the skin in each step of our skin care program. 20 – 30 Skin Age Concerns • Protection and prevention of future damage • Oil Absorption • Bacteria and inflammation reduction • Exfoliation • Blemish control 30 – 40 Skin Age Concerns • Tired, dull skin • Puffy Skin • Skin Protection • Skin Aging • Hormonal Hair Growth • Moisturization • Calming • Skin Nutrition • Onset of hyperpigmentation from sun exposure or hormones So it kinda depends on where you are in life and what products you need. Again your comments are so helpful. Can you or are you allowed to tell me what products contain Salicylic Acid? I believe my skin problem is rosacea and I'd like to try it. Thanks.

#24 mccallbarbara@sbcglobal.net To be sure you have rosacea you need to be diagosed by a doc. You need to use products that are alcolhol and soap free. Something that is cooling and calming to the skin. Definelty not a scrub. BeautiControl has a product lines develope specifically for Rosacea. It is called Skin Equations. Please email me, and I can get more specific what the product does for you and how it helps the roscea. Hope to hear from you so we can work on solving your problem. Thanks, though I didn't know about the breastfeeding/pregnancy warning (and I read all the books!) Pregnancy was the best time for me with barely any acne! I used Alpha Hydroxy in Junior High/High School with Suave, when I ran out of the expensive Mary Kay, and it worked just as well! Now I use salicylic only during "those times" of the month when breakouts come. I tell everyone, even if you are 15, to use some sort of "anti-aging" serum because it helped me, and considering I smoked and I am out in the sun, my facial skin still looks young!

Products containing salicylic acid (which these and aha are "natural", but synthetically produced for mass consumption): St Ives medicated Apricot Scrub (REAL good!), and practically any other facial wash on the market (usually marked medicated). Neutrogena makes a tinted salicylic acid cream for make-up, and that works real good. Cover-girl had an acne fighting one with Noxema in it, which combined with the Suave helped clear my severe acne (medication made me ill.)

Salcylic acid, asprin, is also good for the skin as it reduces sunburn if taken one hour before exposure.
