I've been taking probiotics for years and they are the most effective component to keep my digestive system running smoothly. Don't watse your money buying the yogurt, etc. Eat food that naturally contain these or buy supplements. Be sure to take them on an empty stomach... its much more effective.

eve....Buying yogurt is NOT a waste of money! Yogurt does naturally contain probiotics, such as acidophillus. I have irritable bowel syndrome, and yogurt really helps me. Also, if you can find the brand that you like best, it also taste great, plus it contains calcium and potassium.

That was very helpful. I know a lot of food contain pr and pre-biotics. I started taking one when a neighbor suggested it. I never did know just why I should take it though, except it does help keep me hormonally balanced. Thank you for the definition of both.

Another great, delicious food containing probiotics is raw sauerkraut and sauerkraut juice. We have exceptional quality USDA certifed organic products available at www.commonhealthproducts.org Because our vegetables are made with a starter culture, a mix of highly responsive specific strains of compatible lactic acid bacteria and are vacuum-packed, the lactic bacteria culture present is a stable micro-system. We are able to maximize the # of lactic acid bacteria present (to never more than 100 million bacteria per gram). This is more lactic acid bacteria than is present in homemade products, and in most, if not all, packaged products. To receive the same amount of lactic acid bacteria in 3 & ½ ounces of our raw cultured vegetables, you would need to eat almost 2 & ½ lbs of yogurt. In terms of our diets, regular intake of foods high in lactic acid bacteria is important, but it’s not the strain of bacteria that determines its effectiveness in the body but rather the general group of bacteria. Lactic acid bacteria (the category of "good" bacteria) produce lactic acid, acetic acid, hydrogen peroxide and other organic acids. They reduce pH and help to eliminate pathogens. All of these interactions result in a positive and healthful effect on our bodies. Bacteria, both good and bad, colonize the intestine. With daily intake of lactic acid bacteria, we ensure that good bacteria maintain an edge.
