I think it is about time men started caring about how they look and doing something about it. I believe the fact that women no longer "need" a man to be financial solvent is why men are realizing they need to try harder in the grooming department. As a woman, we no longer need to "settle" for a man whose grooming habits are under par just to keep a roof over our heads. I am not saying a man has to be drop dead gorgeous to get a date, but he does need to be clean, well groomed, smell good, and have taken a look in the mirror regarding what he is wearing. Oh, and about that last comment, ladies, some of you could use a once over before you leave the house as well. If you look good, you exude confidence and women love a confident man.

Technology,,,,,computers,assembly robots,printers,fast food etc.,freed up peoples options so that they could do different things in life.We have the same 24 hrs that was available 20-30-40-2000-50000 years ago.As for grooming,I think that people were a heck of a lot more conscious of how they looked appearence wise to others in the 30s,40s and 50s than they were in the late 60s and on.Appearence is great but without character and a pleasant personality it's nothing but water color on a rusty old bucket.

I'd like to see a little more vanity come back to the sexes, as well as more modesty. It's lacking on both sides. Both women and men walk around dressed like they just barely found their way out of bed. It's very sad.

Hair gel is just part of grooming, but when they get into plastic surgery... well, that's just too vain for me!! Actually, it's vain and shows lack of self esteem... when you add those two characteristics together you've got an arrogant, self absorbed person who only cares about outside appearance usually because there's nothing "inside"... I agree with Fred... character and a pleasant personality makes the person. If they are trying too hard to show off their looks, it usually means they don't have much on the inside.

4: I don't think it's necessarily a matter of "showing off their looks" as much as just taking a little pride in one's looks. fred13red is right that character and a pleasant personality make the person but who would even seriously consider dating someone that had no pride in their appearance and took care of themselves. Would you even approach the person in the first place to find out that they had a pleasant personality and character if they looked sloppy all of the time in their appearance. First impressions do mean a lot. It speak volumes about whether or not a person cares or not about personal hygiene and reflects the degree of how good or bad they feel about themselves with the effort they are putting into it for better or worse. Of course, there are always extremes but I think many people are in an area of not caring at all these days about appearance. Many people don't even know or care how to dress appropriately for a job.

#7... Oh, I definitely care about appearances. I like a well dressed, nicely kempt man... but I mean the thing about "invasive cosmetic surgery" to enhance their looks. That would signal a problem to me... ya know, a little too egotistical and probably very low self-esteem.

Overall health is more important, than appearance. A man or woman may look a little rough around the edges, if they so choose. But so long as the engine is running well, under the hood, vanity is the last thing a person should concern themselves about.

Well, in most animal species, it's the male who is more colorful and more attractive, right? (Lions, birds for obvious examples) Another fun tidbit...I've seen interviews with Elvis' buddies who said he couldn't pass a mirror without tweaking his hair.

I think men are doing more self-evaluating these days because (good-looking) women are just too picky. Although the dating/looks curve is directly commensurate with one's bank account (you gonna tell me it's not?), it's a slim minority of men who are able to get dates just off their looks, and those are the guys who've set the bar. Apparently, the days of brains (for either sex) over beauty are still a myth and, as such, a man's got to take responsibility for what he's presenting to the world....
