About The Expert Provided by: Johns Hopkins University

Chris Saudek, M.D.

Hello, I’m Chris Saudek. I'm a professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins and the director of the Johns Hopkins Diabetes Center. For over 35 years, I've been helping people take care of, and live with, their diabetes. Besides caring for my patients, I enjoy teaching medical students, residents, and other doctors about diabetes and related disorders. My work with people with diabetes has convinced me that, if a person manages his or her diabetes well, they can live a healthy, long, and fulfilling life. This conviction of mine led me to collaborate on a book, The Johns Hopkins Guide to Diabetes: For Today and Tomorrow. I want you to know that being diagnosed with diabetes doesn’t have to ruin, or even shorten, your life. I have also conducted a lot of research studies over the years. With others, I helped develop the implantable insulin pump, and discovered new ways of preventing this disease. I also helped develop a blood test that allows doctors to monitor and quickly assess how well their patients are controlling their diabetes. I'm active in professional organizations, and in 1991 was honored to be the American Diabetes Association’s Outstanding Clinician. I was privileged to serve as the ADA president in 2001-2002 and have served on a number of national committees and editorial boards. In my spare time--yes, I do have a little of that--I enjoy sailing, playing the clarinet, and being with my family. I’m looking forward to helping you live the life you want to live.
