The scariest thing I have learned about childhood obesity is its correlation to life expectancy. The current generation of children is predicted to have a lower life expectancy than that of their parents. Current life expectancy is 79 for women and 74 for men. This epidemic is troubling and should be considered a national emergency. It's time to do something about our children's eating habits. Every time I see a really young child with a soda, I want to scream. My 7 year old doesn't even like soda (lucky for us!) and my 5 year old likes it, but there is no way he gets it daily or even weekly. Maybe once a month. All those calories, let alone the caffeine in a coke. It really starts in young children - parents, it's up to you to encourage healthy eating from the get-go so that your kids make wise choices on their own.

I wouldn't press it. The fact that she eats broccoli and the other fruits you mention? That is so great. My son's pediatrician told me that while variety is nice, it's not nearly as important as encouraging them to continue eating the healthy foods they already like. My 7 year old rarely strays from his favorites - which includes broccoli. Boring, but it's a super-healthy vegetable!
