Personally, I can't taste a difference between organic, locally grown, or "super sale" produce. I'm pretty sure it is just a marketing gimic. Case in point: I used to give my girlfriend a $250 a week allowance and then she could charge any groceries onto the credit card. We were getting mostly organic produce with an average grocery bill approaching almost $175 a week (including food for the baby). I thought this was way too much so I changed her allowance to $350 a week including groceries. I have not sensed any difference in my meals and I know that on some weeks she has actually spent less then $100 and ends up with a few extra bucks for a *free* pedicure. The only complaint I do have is that on grocery shopping days she spends so much time clipping coupons and looking for the best deals in the paper that the house doesn't get cleaned all the way and the meal is somewhat lacking - but I put up with it because that's what love is!

So true about the nutrient content in locally grown veggies and fruits. People don't realize that some of the so-called "fresh" produce they buy at the grocery store were picked 2 or 3 weeks ago (maybe even longer for fruits!!) With each passing day the nutrient content goes down dramatically... Therefore, frozen is a very good alternative if you are not sure about the freshness. Produce plants freeze in the field, on the spot with a huge machine (after washing!) and that keeps them nutrient packed for a month or so.

Organic frozen veggies and fruits from Trader Joes are excellent... If you guys have this store in your area.. it's worse the trip .. the prices are great and they have an amazing selection of healthy foods .....

Interesting article. Maybe in a future article you can tell us about the mysterious disappearance of the honeybees in America and how it's going to effect the food supply of the world. Which food can we expect to see a shortage of if the honeybees continue to disappear? Which countries do you think we are going to turn to as a source for food if we ever reach that point? Was this brought on by genetically modified food, the overuse of pesticides, an act of terrorism, or some other oddity altogether we just aren't aware of yet? More importantly, why doesn't anybody in the media ever address this beyond telling us we will be paying higher prices for certain items? How about finding out what's going on with that story and reporting back to us with that? Love your articles Joy!

ricecake..I did hear about the honeybee problem on the radio if i remember right...I myself do buy raw honey and regular honey...I never did hear about what caused this problem...U can be sure the price will go up!!!..O.K. BYE, HONEY!..LOL..........:)

I have just recently obtained Internet acess & found your Web site by chance. I want to know more about organics as part of my CDR portfolio (I'm a Diet Tech,Registered)goal. Why is it that when I buy apples from the store they are really not fresh? When I bite into the center it is moldy and gross. Yet the outside seems perfect and ripe.

Locally grown food are much better, more nutritious though availability be be limited to seasons. Unfortunately, due to the population problem in Africa, local farmers are tempted to used fertilizers inorder to meet the demand of the expanding population. The test of fertized produce are normally different though they may appear very juicy.
