We weened our son on organic veg puree (fresh, Local) At this stage in life, it is most important to give a growing child the opportunity to have real food. There are many reports out there that link the use of "conventional" pesticides and fertalisers to immune deficiency and behavioral difficulties in later life. Any companies that claim that the use of these chemicals and biochemicals are for the good of the consumer are totally deluded. Pest control and advanced growth are solely for the benefit of annual turnover. the problem is that while there are regulations in place as to the quantities used, it doesnt take a genius to imagine how a desperate farmer may increase the amount he uses in order to gain a bit more profit from a crop. Many of the elements in agrichemicals are only a step away from the nerve chemicals used in "dirty" weapons. Next time you eat a non organic veg product that you know has been sprayed with lethal chemicals, imagine the company boss sitting in his super cruiser yacht rubbing his hands together and smiling away to himself as you bump up his salary....

Yes, organically grown fruits and veggies are good for our health. Most of the people said that organic fruits and veggies are more expensive that the convetionally harvested. Which I disagreed! Because in our country we have discovered a very good liquid organic fertilizer (fish, kelp & Guano Extracts with Natures Beneficial Microorganism - 4 in 1)and can match the chemical fertilizer in terms of usage, its a very economical.

the bottom line is available "$"! I do try my best to buy from local fruit stands in summer--other wise, in Milw., it's Trader Joe's & Outpost, Whole Foods & City Mrkt...I understand the extra expense is necessary but it takes a big bite out of the budget! Everything looks so good it's hard to buy only the minimum needs.

Personally I have been buying organic foods for 8 months now and I can see a difference in my skin, and health. The hamburger, ice cream, and fruits take me back to the taste from when I was a little girl and I am now 38 years of age. I do taste a difference; I also noticed that many of the organic fruits and vegetables don't rot or turn as fast. When I use to eat regular foods, many times I would experience unexplained headaches and stomache pains, but since I have been eating orgainic I have not experienced that. I do agree that organic foods are costly. However, there is programs that most local churches have called food sharing. Each individual that would like to participate would put up an amount of money to by large quaintities of food, and split it up among the participants. This way it is not as costly to the individual.

Excellent article, as a farmer that growers for my local community, the article is right on! Our farm is not organic but drasticly limits the amount of chemicals used on our farm. We also raise all natural beef with no hormones and antibiotics. Everything the animals eat is grown on our farm! Our customers tell us it is the best tasting meat they have ever tasted. Thank you for the articale.

When you go local you: 1-keep the money in your community thereby helping the local economy. 2- reduce the distance the food travels and the use of fossil fuels to get that food to you. Organic food still travels hundereds if not thousands of miles unless it is local. 3- can meet the people who produce your food.

JOY, YOUR ARTICAL WAS VERY GOOD, I COMMEND YOU BECOUSE WE FARM; WE HAVE CONSIDERED MUCH ABOUT GETTING AS AN ORGANICLY CERTIFIED FARM, IT'S A LONG PROCESS OF I THINK ABOUT 3 YEARS, WHICH WE THINK WOULD BE A GOOD ROUTE TO GO, ON THE OTHER HAND FARMERS WHO ARE CONCERNED ABOUT HEALTH ISSUES AND THE FOOD THEY GROW ARE GOING TO BE CAREFUL NOT TO USE HARMFUL PESTICIDES ON THEIR FRUITS AND VEGATABLES. WE ALL IN THE HEALTH AND NUTRITION BUSINESS TRY TO BE VERY CAREFUL OF THE SUPPLEMENTS AND FOOD WE TAKE IN.

As a farmer, I feel a greater sense of responcibility and pride in my product when I sell directly to families I know. They know me and they have a greater confidence in what they are eating. Organic producers include both those that are in organic because they believe in the spirit of organic, and those industrial money driven operations that are skirting the intent of the organic rules at every chance to increase their profits. I agree with the author that locally grown can include food grown in an industrial / chemical environment, so you want to take a minute out and look at the operation. Eat more vegtables and fruits when they are in season locally. Consider buying a freezer full of grass finished beef in the fall, when it is at it's greatest most healthy state. homegrownbeef
