    you can't afford not to eat healthy! poor dietary habits will catch up with you in terms of medical costs, days missed from work, death! saying you have to be wealthy to eat well is a cop-out and a crutch for continuing unhealthy habits. i have no doubt that a person can eat a healthy meal at home for less than the cost of a value meal. try reading fast food nation, the omnivore's dilemma or watching supersize me if you need scientific and empirical evidence of what an unhealthy diet can do to you. change isn't easy, but it's worth it!

    Having read the advice given by the "professional" as well as everyone's comments so far, I am amazed at the vastly differing opinions. It need not be all or nothing, guys. My grandmother used to tell me that "Moderation in all things" was the key to live by, be it health food, junk food, religion, politics--all things in moderation. And she was right!

    Having read the advice given by the "professional" as well as everyone's comments so far, I am amazed at the vastly differing opinions. It need not be all or nothing, guys. My grandmother used to tell me that "Moderation in all things" was the key to live by, be it health food, junk food, religion, politics--all things in moderation. And she was right!

    This is not a column about class warfare - it's about nutrition. If you can afford a PC and internet access, you can afford to avoid sugar and you don't have to have Donald Trump's bank account to do it - whole grain or wheat bread instead of white, avoid soft drinks and fruit drinks (that SAVES you money!!), add lettuce and tomatoes to your sandwiches (usually no charge at most sandwich shops) as this will add fiber to your food intake, substitute a healthly cereal (I prefer Kashi Go Lean) for the garbage you currently eat (same cost), mix your cereal with cottage cheese rather than milk (same cost), and add some grilled chicken strips to your salad at dinner (nominal cost). You'll feel so much better after you purge your body of all that sugar that you'll write friendlier comments!

    Can anyone tell me how much sugar does a cup of cooked rice have? I eat rice a lot and I wanted to know if I'm eating healthy.

    Many processed foods have high fructose corn syrup instead of sucrose. They are not equivalent to each other. No one measures a teaspoon of HFCS (which is a liquid). Reading the ingredient label will tell you whether the product contains HFCS or Sucrose (aka table sugar).

    WHO CARES!!!! listen we all die someday. So if i have to eat that everyday to live a couple more years then HIPPY!!! Chances are you are going to die by something else then sugar intake...

    Looking at the numbers is sure an eye opener. Its amazing how fast it adds up. But the example menu for the day is just as amazing. Wow, that must be the worst tasting menu ever put together. And for lunch, those of us who actually work for a living not sit at a desk, don't have the option to eat soup. Thats the problem with these things.

    In response to one of the previous posts, Eating right is not expensive. You dotn neccesarily have to buy the most marked up organic food to eat right and lose weight....apples, lean meats, etc are not expense.....i swear people find any excuse, lol

    Since having weight loss surgery almost one year ago, I have to watch my sugar intact pretty closely - or I get sick. There are so many ways to cut down on processed sugar and still satisfy the sweet tooth monster. But watch out for the other culprit on sugar free foods - SUGAR ALCOHOLS! You have to watch how much of that is in there also, as it can have some nasty side effects. You'll be running to the bathroom like crazy for hours, if you eat too much sugar alcohol. Cutting out sugar, along with just eating a lot less, has made me lose 136 pounds in almost one year. And I don't feel deprived one bit! I still eat some sugar, just not nearly as much as I did before. Instead of an entire king sized Snickers bar for an afternoon snack, I eat a mini sized one. It works, but I know that the surgery has pretty much forced me to "follow the rules."

    Sugar is not the only thing you have to watch out for. Its also the hidden salts that are in your foods. Most frozen dinners are filled with salt....even the healthy ones. Its true that its more expensive to eat healthy than to eat fattening foods. Its worth it, but when the prices of everything else is rising.....its hard to spare that extra expense. Isn't it easier to just jog around ther block to stay healthy?

    Holy cow people.. You have time to go to a fast food resaturant, order food, pay for it and eat it (presumably in your car on the ride home) but you don't have time to cook an egg? Eggs are quite possibly the fastest things to cook, and separating an egg takes...mmm....4.9 seconds? Give me a break! No wonder America is so obese!! You spend MORE money on packaged/frozen foods than just buying some veggies, a few cans of beans and some potatoes. Shop around the perimeter of your grocery store if you need someone to spell it out for you.
